All sports and activities have a risk of injury, but the benefits of exercise outweigh these risks.

Karen Frye, DO

The most frequent types of sports injuries are sprains (injuries to ligaments), strains (injuries to muscles) and stress fractures (injuries to bones). Injury occurs when excessive stress is placed on tendons, joints, bones and muscle. Injury can also be the result of overuse of any of these structures. Different activities require different functions of our muscles and body.

Strengthening exercises, posture, proper form and function and flexibility all contribute to injury prevention. If we can maintain a balance of all of these, we are at a decreased risk of injury.

Fletcher Colwell, MD
