BEACON Senior News - Western Colorado

Did the Western Slope choose you?

Jun 01, 2018 09:00PM ● By Cloie Sandlin

Melanie Wiseman, one of our long-time writers, shares her story of how she traded the harsh winters of the Midwest for western Colorado’s dry summers in a love story that resonates with many BEACON readers.

Whether you were born here, moved here to raise a family or relocated after retiring from a big-city job, you likely feel a similar connection to the Western Slope due to its fresh air and majestic mountains, in addition to affordable living costs, recreational prospects and friendly communities. It’s no wonder we choose to live here! What’s not to love?

Summer travel and festivals

Maybe I’m biased, but I think we live in one of the most beautiful places in the U.S. Isn’t it worth exploring? Our glossy Summer Travel & Festivals section is your guide to uncovering Colorado’s hidden gems and festivals big and small. Some of my favorite featured travel destinations are only a couple hours away. Whether you go for the day or the week, don’t be afraid to venture off the beaten path and let us know what you find there.

Got game?

The Western Colorado Senior Games gives you another reason to get active and enjoy the outdoors, and the 2018 games are right around the corner. Choose from more than 55 competitive events, ranging from pickleball to bocce ball, swimming to track and field, pinochle to cards, and golf to dance. Find registration information in next month’s BEACON. The fee is nominal and it’s great fun for anyone age 50 or older.

Show us your pets!

I’m one of those people who constantly shares photos and videos of my dog, Skye, on social media, even if she’s doing the most mundane things. Pets are important to BEACON readers, which makes our August issue—centered on pets and their people—our most popular issue of the year. We want to hear about your furry (or scaly or feathered) friends! Tell us about your pet and send a photo by July 15 to [email protected] or P.O. Box 3895, Grand Junction, CO 81502.
