For the love of dogs...and cats

Aug 04, 2018 05:31AM ● By Cloie Sandlin

My dog, Skye

don’t understand people who don’t like pets. Personally, I can’t imagine life without them.

I didn’t have pets growing up because my grandmother liked a spotless house. It’s not that she didn’t like pets—surely it’s because she had enough messes to clean with my parents and three kids living with her under one roof.

I was a teenager before my family got our first dog—a chow/shepherd mix named Whisper. She was a great dog and I loved her dearly. I also had a few cats.

Then over six years ago, my boyfriend, Sam, surprised me when he brought Skye home from Roice-Hurst Humane Society. I fell in love instantly. For the first time in my life, she wasn’t my parents’ dog or my sisters’ dog—she was my dog (well, Sam’s, too). And no pet deposit, vet bill or anything else was going to keep me from loving and taking care of her.

Gosh, it’s great to have a dog; and now we’re looking to add another.

If you’re in the same position, please know that there are already so many pets out there that need love and that have a whole lot of love to give. Please spay and neuter, and consider adopting from rescues and shelters. (And if you know of any reputable corgi rescues, give me a ring!)
