Mantey Heights and La Villa Grande Rehabilitation and Care Centers have deep roots in the Grand Valley. As Five Star Senior Living communities, they share the mission of providing a warm, inviting environment where seniors of all abilities and interests can thrive.

Five Star’s person-centered approach to care focuses on meeting residents’ needs through five dimensions of wellness: emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual and physical.

Staff members at La Villa Grande and Mantey Heights ensure that residents are comfortable, engaged and fulfilled through a myriad of services, amenities and activities.

Both facilities offer memory care, respite care, rehabilitation and skilled nursing care, and boast the longest-running, in-house therapy departments in the valley, providing residents with physical, occupational and speech therapies. They’re also certified in Music & Memory’s personalized music program, which is proven to improve conversation and comprehension in residents.

Restaurant-style dining and short-order cooking make La Villa Grande’s dining experience pleasant and convenient. Mantey Heights is working on transforming its dining services to fit this need as well. Both facilities create engaging and meaningful life experiences for residents through regular outings, exercise classes and resident gardens.

“We have flower and vegetable gardens, and this year we have a resident gardener,” said La Villa Grande Admissions Director Lisa Smith.

Five Star facilities respect all residents and their personal life choices, so when several Mantey Heights residents requested a designated smoker-friendly area, one was provided on a back patio.

La Villa Grande recently created a family room so residents could spend time with their families in a private, home-like setting, complete with couches, big screen TVs, and a table for sharing family meals. A resident advisory board approved every decision about the room, from the wall color to the furniture arrangement.

“I have never been denied by corporate any request for a resident. They always do the right thing,” said La Villa Grande Administrator Bob Davis.

Award-winning memory and dementia care

“US News and World Report” rated Mantey Heights as one of the top nursing homes in the nation for 2017-2018, said Kim Bryant, the facility’s administrator. It’s an honor the whole staff takes pride in, but they aren’t resting on their laurels.

Most of the management staff at Mantey Heights are dementia certified through Hilltop to better engage and connect with dementia patients and to make their lives more meaningful.

Mantey Heights will house a virtual dementia tour to help care providers better understand and empathize with their loved ones as they experience sensory challenges associated with dementia first-hand using earphones, goggles, gloves and shoe inserts.

“The visual dementia tour is a scientifically proven and patented set of sensory tools for the public to experience, as well as the medical community and caregivers,” said Mantey Heights Admissions Director Steve Coates.

La Villa Grande offers Bridge to Rediscovery, a secured unit specializing in memory care for residents with dementia. This award-winning Montessori-based program helps residents maintain their dignity and identity by preserving their skills, passions and interests.

“We like promoting through the BEACON because of the large demographic and the number of readers,” said Smith. “The BEACON is a vehicle to get the word out to the people we need to reach about our services. We also really enjoy being a part of BeaconFest every year.”
