Magic Circle Players celebrates 60 years of quality live theatre in the 2019/2020 Season.

The Montrose community theatre originated in the summer of 1959, when Bette Dustin Spiro convinced a group of friends to put on a play, and the newly minted Magic Circle Players began performing at the Armory.

The name Magic Circle Players was coined by Spiro, based on her philosophy that the theatre is comprised of a circle of people—a playwright, cast and crew, and the audience—who together, produce the magic of theatre. The fledgling theatre group had the potential to “fall to pieces,” but continued to thrive under volunteers who rose to the challenge of keeping community theatre alive.

Following an extensive fund raising campaign, in 1974, Magic Circle moved to its current location in Montrose, and is the oldest continuously running theatre in Colorado. The theatre is still powered by the generous support of the community and credit it’s longevity to the volunteers who, for the love of theatre, give willingly of their time, energy and talent for the show to go on.

“Our volunteers make us successful,” said Lisa Rediger, who heads up Magic Circle Players. “People have come together because of love of the theatre and invest themselves. They see the power and influence of the dramatic arts. We love to play and the interpersonal relationships create the ‘magic.’”
