BEACON Senior News - Western Colorado

Vote for our 2022 Montrose-Delta Volunteer of the Year

What age group makes up the majority of our community’s volunteers? Seniors!

That’s why the BEACON gives local organizations the opportunity to recognize their outstanding senior volunteers at Montrose-Delta BeaconFest Boomer & Senior Fair on Thursday, September 15.

While we recognize all nominated volunteers at BeaconFest, only one can be named Volunteer of the Year. With so many wonderful volunteers to choose from, we’re asking for your help!

Montrose-Delta County Nominees

 Darla Volgamore

Nominated by Amanda Twamley, HopeWest

Retiree Darla Volgamore is busier now than when she worked full time. She started volunteering at HopeWest in the administrative office in 2011, and soon after, she started assisting at Heirlooms for Hospice with their clerical needs.

She also joined the volunteer force at The Abraham Connection in Delta, first working the overnight shift. Eventually, she became the meal coordinator and has since become a member of the board.

Darla helps with many of the details for HopeWest’s various events. She helps with galas, cornhole tournaments, activities for patients, and so much more. As busy as she is volunteering in these different capacities, Darla still gets out and has lots of fun at the golf course, at the rec center, watching sports (especially tennis) and baking cookies. She is renowned for her carrot cake.

 Lavon “Blondie” Campbell

Nominated by Joy Long, Golden Circle Seniors

Many Montrose seniors are acquainted with Blondie Campbell. She has volunteered with the Senior Center since the ’90s. Blondie has been on the Golden Circle Board of Directors, in one position or another. She has worked the floor, behind the desk, and anything else she was asked to do.

Blondie has been integral in organizing and working the Saturday night dances for years. Last month, Blondie celebrated her 96th birthday. She is still a great example of the benefits of staying active and involved, and finding something that you love to do.

Thank you Blondie for all of your hard work over these past years and all that you continue to do. If you want to meet Blondie, drop by the Saturday night dance, say “hello,” and tell her how much you appreciate all that she has done over the years for Montrose seniors.

 Beth McCorkle

Nominated by Bill Towle, All Points Transit

Beth McCorkle is an excellent volunteer driver for All Points Transit. She has great customer service and is very dependable!
