Vote for Montrose-Delta Volunteer of the Year

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR VOTING IS CLOSED!

Find out who our readers chose as the 2024 Volunteer of the Year at Montrose-Delta BeaconFest on Thursday, September 12, at the Montrose Pavilion. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

Jim & Sue Barnosky

Nominated by City of Delta

The City of Delta recently hosted the second annual 4th of July Western Sky Balloon Festival, which was a tremendous success! This event would not have been possible without the help, support and dedication of local balloon pilots Jim and Sue Barnosky.

From the beginning planning stages, Jim and Sue have volunteered countless hours of their time, skills and ballooning knowledge to our community. They taught us everything about ballooning, from forecasting weather conditions for optimal flight days to setting up and chasing the balloon and finally, packing it all away. Whenever we had questions, they were always there to guide us. Their contributions went beyond just advice. They volunteered their balloon for sponsor rides, conducted test flights to gather information for new balloonists and even participated in the Daddy/Daughter dance at the rec center, offering rides to participants. They were always the first to sign up for the ascensions and balloon glows during the festival weekend. We can’t even begin to add up all the hours they have volunteered throughout the year. We appreciate them and really want to recognize them for how important they are to the community!

John Britton

Nominated by Montrose Animal Services

John has volunteered his time with Montrose Animal Services for over a decade. He walks dogs with unwavering commitment, regardless of rain, thunder, wind, heat or cold. His willingness to help clean the kennels, even when it means getting dirty, reflects his deep care for animals. John’s dedication and kindhearted nature make a tremendous difference in our mission!

Bryan Cashion & Sara Ungrodt

Nominated by Montrose Botanical Society

Bryan and Sara are a dynamic duo. Sara is a longtime, active member of the Montrose Botanical Society, where she shares her expertise as a professional landscape architect and CSU native plant master. She has designed several areas within the Gardens and oversees their daily horticultural needs. She has given her time and talent as a leader, serving on the board in various roles. Sara supports the Gardens’ educational mission by presenting workshops and programs on plant care. She is also co-secretary of the Black Canyon Astronomical Society and volunteers at her church. Bryan is also a long-time supporter of the Gardens, and is instrumental in designing and maintaining the irrigation system. His contributions also include electrical repairs and serving on committees. Bryan has served as president of the Black Canyon Astronomical Society for 11 years, strengthening partnerships, giving safe sun-viewing presentations and sharing his telescope for night sky viewing. He also assisted with the Dark Sky designation for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and advocates for dark sky lighting practices in the community. Additionally, he volunteers at his church.

Hartland Clubb Jr.

Nominated by Valley Symphony Association

Hartland recently stepped down from the Valley Symphony Association’s Board of Directors after 20 years of service, during which he helped bring classical music to life on the Western Slope. He also played in the orchestra and sang in the chorus for years. His hard work and dedication have ensured the Valley Symphony Association’s survival and growth, leaving it poised for amazing future success!

Karen Locke

Nominated by HopeWest

Karen dedicates considerable time volunteering to make our community a better place. For over 15 years, she has volunteered for HopeWest at our Heirlooms for Hospice store in Delta. She volunteers by promoting events and wonderfully supporting all that HopeWest does. Karen has also volunteered at Grand Mesa Arts & Events Center in Cedaredge since its inception. Additionally, she volunteers at Cedaredge Golf Course, where she helps organize the bi-annual art show that features local artists, many of whom she personally recruited. She also serves on the OB Promotions Board, which raises funds for the golf course. After retiring, Karen began volunteering as a mountain ski guide for Vail Resorts Guest Services. With all the time and support Karen gives to our community, she truly deserves to be named Volunteer of the Year!
