Valley Symphony Association (VSA) launches its 54th season with the theme “Heritage,” a tribute to its musical legacy and vision for the future.
This theme is part of a two-year celebration of the VSA’s history, followed next season by “Legacy.” Inspired in part by the upcoming America 250 and Colorado 150 anniversaries, Artistic Director Troy Raper explored the orchestra’s own past to celebrate its contributions through music.
“The Valley Symphony has been a steady presence in the region for over 50 years,” Raper said. “After digging through our library archives, I selected music that I felt would not only spark joy for returning listeners, but also inspire a new appreciation for the music. These concerts give audiences a chance to deepen their understanding of music’s role in their lives.”
This season also marks a new chapter of growth with the addition of a general manager role and Glen Justis stepping in as board president, succeeding longtime board member, volunteer, musician and supporter Hartland H. Clubb Jr.
Here’s what to expect from Season 54:
Pops in the Park (September 6 & 7)
Celebrate the end of summer with free outdoor concerts in Cedaredge’s Town Park and Montrose’s Riverbottom Park. These performances take audiences on a musical journey through time, featuring everything from marches to soundtracks. They aim to reconnect with returning audiences and welcome those who may be hearing the orchestra for the first time.
Bach to Rock (October 25 & 26)
A bold mashup of musical eras, this concert spans centuries—from the baroque period to the 1980s. Featuring everything from solo flutes and cellos to energetic rock tunes, it merges genres into one unforgettable performance. Expect well-known composers alongside a few names that might surprise you.
Christmas by Candlelight (December 6 & 7)
Ring in the season with the orchestra and chorus in a joyful holiday concert filled with festive sing-alongs and holiday cheer. Returning this year is a special one-hour performance for families with young children at 3 p.m. Saturday, just before the downtown Parade of Lights.
Canyons to Country (February 21 & 22)
This Western-themed concert pays tribute to the region we call home, featuring Americana fiddler Marie Rhines in a program filled with prairie songs and hoedowns.
High Notes to Harmonies (March 28 & 29)
Newly appointed chorus conductor Nathan Howe leads a performance that traces the history of the VSA through song. This concert series weaves together a choral tapestry that reflects the VSA’s legacy and growth over the years.
Past to Present (April 18 & 19)
Throughout the season, audience members can submit notecards with pieces they’d like to hear, which will be considered for the final concert. This performance also serves as a bridge to next season’s “Legacy” theme.
Except for Pops in the Park, all concerts take place at the Montrose Pavilion with performances at 7 p.m. on Saturdays and 3 p.m. on Sundays (plus a Saturday family matinee for the Christmas concert.)
