BEACON Senior News - Western Colorado

September brings grandparents day, health resources and BeaconFest!

Sep 03, 2025 12:33PM ● By Cloie Sandlin

Lynn Gendusa’s story about her great-grandmother captures something I think we all feel when it comes to grandparents: we wanted ours to live forever. But as she so beautifully reminds us, even the strongest people we know—the ones who seem invincible—eventually leave this world.

Hopefully your grandkids feel the same way about you. That’s what makes September, Grandparents Month, especially meaningful to me. Every year I share photos of my own grandparents in this column because they’re still some of my favorite people to think about, even though they’re gone.

Good grandparents fill in the parenting blanks, and I was blessed with some of the best. So on National Grandparents Day, September 7—and all month long—take a moment to remind these incredible role models just how much they mean to you. And to all the grandparents out there, thank you!

FALL PREVENTION RESOURCES

September is also National Falls Prevention Month. Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, but the good news is that many are preventable. In this edition, we’ve outlined classes and resources here on the Western Slope to help you stay strong and independent at home. (It’s also National PACE Month—so check out our story about HopeWest PACE.)

WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S

My dad was diagnosed with dementia in his early 60s. I wasn’t there to witness his decline, but my grandmother, who was well into her 80s, cared for him with the same patience she had shown years earlier when my grandfather battled Alzheimer’s.

Because dementia and Alzheimer’s run in my family, I’ve learned a lot about the disease. Still, experts don’t know how to prevent it or slow its progression.

Whether or not someone close to you has been affected (chances are they have), you can support Alzheimer’s research and local services by participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, September 13 in Montrose and Saturday, October 11 in Grand Junction.

While our brains naturally change with age, Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. Memory loss that disrupts daily life is never normal. If you’re concerned about your memory or a loved one’s, visit our resource page for articles we’ve published on early warning signs and ways to get help. You’ll also find encouragement and insight in our Caregiving Columns.

SEE YOU AT BEACONFEST ON SEPTEMBER 11

Come see us at the area’s funnest event for boomers and seniors! Explore over 60 booths, win prizes, enjoy live performances, score freebies and eat some delicious food from local restaurants.

Be part of the fun at the Montrose Pavilion on Thursday, September 11, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. This event is our way of celebrating age and to say thank you for your continued support of BEACON Senior News. Did I mention that admission is free?

Plan your day and discover everything that’s in store at BeaconFest.com.
