Western Colorado food banks, SNAP assistance and pet pantry locations
Thousands of Western Slope residents are feeling the strain as federal food assistance hits pause, leaving many wondering how they’ll afford their next meal—or even feed their pets. In Mesa County alone, more than 20,000 people rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) each month, and 10% of them are older adults. With November’s benefits temporarily halted due to the ongoing federal shutdown, food pantries are seeing record demand and rushing to fill the gap.
Local nonprofits and volunteers are stepping up in a big way—from food banks and senior meal programs to the Roice-Hurst Humane Society’s Pet Pantry, which provides free pet food and supplies to help families keep their animals at home. Whether you need a little help this month or want to lend a hand, here’s where to find food, pet supplies and ways to give back across Western Colorado.

ROICE-HURST
SNAP benefits are set to pause on November 1 for more than 11,000 households in Mesa County and 3,500 households in Delta County, leaving many families to navigate sudden food insecurity. Because two in three families include a pet, this pause means many households may face the difficult choice between feeding their pets or feeding themselves.
Roice-Hurst Humane Society’s Pet Pantry program provides free pet food and supplies to anyone in need, ensuring that pets can remain cared for at home with the families who love them. Support is available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last at Roice-Hurst’s locations in Grand Junction (362 28 Road) and Delta (720 W. 4th Street).
To access the Pet Pantry, families can visit Roice-Hurst Humane Society during open hours, which are Tuesday through Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. in Grand Junction, and Monday through Friday from 12 to 4 p.m. and weekends from 12 to 3 p.m. in Delta. Those seeking assistance are encouraged to submit a form ahead of time at RHhumanesociety.org/petpantry.
To meet increased demand for the Pet Pantry, Roice-Hurst is asking for the community’s support. Items in high demand are dry dog food, dry cat food, wet and dry kitten food, and reusable bags. Supporters may drop off supplies at Roice-Hurst Humane Society, Discovery Auto Group (2490 US-6&50), or any Grand Junction ANB Bank location.
Alternatively, supporters can order items from Roice-Hurst’s Amazon Wishlist to be shipped directly to the shelter, or they can make a monetary donation to Roice-Hurst’s Animal Resource Center that can be used to purchase high-demand items as they run low.
Donation links and more information can be found at RHhumanesociety.org/snap.
