HopeWest highlights value of early hospice support
HopeWest is encouraging families to seek support early when facing serious illness, sharing the story of Becky Martinez and her father, Alfredo, who lived with advancing Lewy body dementia. Martinez said she initially didn’t think he was ready for hospice because he was still eating and taking walks, but the HopeWest team explained the program could help keep him comfortable and provide hands-on support. After Alfredo met his HopeWest team, Martinez said he settled into a better routine and seemed happier. The team took time to explain care and communicate with the family, she said, and learned what mattered most to Alfredo, including his Spanish heritage. HopeWest leaders emphasized that earlier involvement can help families manage symptoms and care, reduce stress and may lead to fewer hospital or emergency room visits. HopeWest also offers support beyond hospice and palliative care, including dementia support, PACE and grief services. For more information, call 970-241-2212 or visit HopeWestCares.org/earlysupport
