Red Cross seeks Western Colorado volunteers to help families in crisis

The American Red Cross is encouraging Western Colorado residents to volunteer this year to help people affected by home fires, other disasters and emergencies. Christie Caster, executive director of the Red Cross of Western Colorado, said volunteers make up about 90% of the organization’s workforce and help expand its ability to respond when people are facing “their darkest hour.” Volunteer roles include serving on the Disaster Action Team to assist families after a fire with emotional support, emergency financial help and recovery information. Other opportunities include working as a Hero Care caseworker to support military members, veterans and their families with emergency communications and services. The Red Cross also relies on volunteers to help ensure blood is available for patients who need it. Those interested can apply at RedCross.org/volunteer
