Cedaredge artist Dale Russell Smith, an award-winning watercolor painter and dedicated arts volunteer, died suddenly on January 9 at age 81. Known for his detailed and expressive landscapes, Smith built a reputation not only as a talented artist but also as a generous supporter of the local arts community. In addition to his own work, Smith played a key role in fostering the arts in the Surface Creek area. Beginning in 2018, he served as curator of the Starr Family Gallery at Grand Mesa Arts & Events Center, where he helped install exhibits, mentor artists and create a welcoming space for visitors. His volunteer efforts and leadership made a lasting impact on the organization and the broader community. Smith’s contributions were recognized in 2025 when he received BEACON Senior News’ Volunteer of the Year Award. Those who knew him remember both his artistic talent and his commitment to sharing it with others.
