Hilltop centenarians share their secrets to a long, happy life

May 04, 2026 04:03PM ● By Debbie Van Dyke

It isn't every day that five centuries of life are gathered under one roof.

The Fountains of Hilltop in Grand Junction recently hosted a birthday party for five women turning 100 and older. Families, friends and residents enjoyed cake, cocktails, made-to-order burgers, a photo booth and a barbershop quartet in honor of the milestone.

“Each year we have a resident turn 100, but this is the first time we've had five in one year,” said Sarah Aviles, who plans activities at The Fountains.

Decked in glittery birthday tiaras and sashes, three of the centenarians shared their secrets to living well with the BEACON.

Angela Sharpe-Gumbert, 101

“I’ve made the best of every birthday. The secret is the power of humor and living a good life. Enjoy everything—the good and the bad.”

Emma Jean Sachen, 100

“I always try to be happy. If I meet anybody that's sad, I'll bet you they'll be laughing by the time I'm finished with them.”

Phyllis Otto, 100

“Eat a good diet, take care of yourself, lots of prayer, hope and love. And good genes. My mother lived to 102.”
