You’re at a casual gathering, talking with new friends about anything and everything, when someone turns to you with a smile and asks, “So, when are you planning to retire?”
In Western Colorado, many adults 55 and older aren’t counting down the days to retirement. They’re leading organizations, building businesses, mentoring the next generation and serving their communities.
In this three-part section, 12 local professionals share why they’re still working, what keeps them motivated and why retirement isn’t part of the plan—at least not yet.

- Charles Reams, Public administrator for 21st Judicial District of Colorado and Managing Partner at Reams & Reams Attorneys at Law
Charles Reams enjoys helping people solve problems.
“So many people come to me with challenges they think are insurmountable,” he said. “They might be the victim of financial exploitation, attempting to attain public assistance, navigating complex financial issues, dealing with interfamily conflicts or struggling with end-of-life decisions. It’s satisfying to let them know I can shoulder this and find a solution. If I get to a point where I feel I can no longer do that, well, that’s when I’ll retire.”
He also finds joy in working alongside his son, Zachary.
“I also get real pleasure from this work because my son Zachary and I run the business together. He’ll take over one day, and that makes me proud.”

- Terry Chase, DrTerryChase.com
After 43 years in health care and education, Terry Chase has redefined retirement for herself.
“I love that I get to make a difference in people’s lives through my speaking, coaching and writing,” Chase said. “I’m on a mission to help people return to themselves for greater peace, harmony and effectiveness.”

- Stephanie & Rick Griggs, Owners of Bookcliff Gardens
Stephanie and Rick Griggs bubble with enthusiasm when they talk about their work at Bookcliff Gardens.
“This is such a special place. Rick and I love being active and engaged in a business that is so rewarding,” Stephanie said. “Our staff is amazing and knowledgeable, and they provide beauty for our community. ”
Their loyal customers make the work even more meaningful.
“Many of them have been coming to Bookcliff Gardens since they were children,” she said.

“Our mission holds real meaning for me. If I retired now, I would really miss the human interaction and the collaboration.”
- Martha Graf, Development Specialist at PrimeHealth+
Martha Graf loves that her work helps people access affordable health care. As development specialist for PrimeHealth+, she finds meaning in the organization’s mission and in working alongside others.
Retirement crosses her mind, but she isn’t ready yet.
“I love working as a team, pulling together to make things happen,” said Graf. “That feeds me."
